How did AlSouq get its name?

The true origin of the word “AlSouq” is a mystery known only to our founders. If someone asks you where the name came from, just make something up. That’s what we do.

Who makes AlSouq?

So many great people! They include our executive team and our global staff. Together we support a community of millions of creative businesses and their customers.

Working at AlSouq is also a lot of fun. Our culture is grounded in the maker spirit, and we put creativity, community and thoughtfulness into everything we do. We have communal lunches called “AlSouq”, learn from each other at “AlSouq School”, and get creative together at the occasional “Crafternoon”. From Islamabad to Karachi, we’ve built our culture with care.

How does AlSouq make money?

Our business model is based on shared success: we make money when AlSouq sellers make money. Marketplace revenue includes free listing and a 1.5% fee for sales completed on our website. Additional revenue comes from seller services including our advertising platform, payment processing and discounted shipping labels.

Can sellers make a living on AlSouq?

Absolutely. AlSouq sellers range from hobbyists to professional merchants, and have a broad range of personal and professional goals. Some AlSouq sellers just want some extra pocket money, while others depend on their shops to support themselves and their families. Our 2016 Seller Survey reveals a unique population of Internet-enabled creative entrepreneurs who are building businesses on their own terms—prioritising flexibility, independence and creativity. 76% of PAK sellers consider their AlSouq shop to be a business and for almost a third, their creative business has become so well established that they are able to focus on it as their sole occupation.
